Past or Present?
Archival Inkjet on Paper
36"H x 24"W, 2018

I got considerably bogged down trying to make sense out of the concepts of past, present and future. This kept me up at night! Originally, I decided that only the present could actually exist. Then I concluded that the duration of the present had to be infinitely short. If that were true, then not only were the past and future fiction, but the present was too short to experience. So what is all this life kerfuffle I am immersed in? Finally I settled on the notion that our biological bodies sort of store up the present and stretch it out slowly into the past to give us a reassuring feeling of continuity. (I will be speaking on this very subject at the Max Plank Institute in November.)
