Items Nouveau

The old eMERITUS site is transformed. You may find reference to it here and there, but for all purposes I have returned it and me to being the individual C. T. Chew.

August saw me applying for teaching positions in Seattle. I added a new gallery, @At School, that shows many of the fun projects I have done with classes in the past. It now seems I will be teaching 7th grade life sciences at Eckstein Middle School. It's within easy walking distance of my house, truly a relief. I suspect I will know a number of my new students as well, both from my own teaching and from Sylvie's old elementary, University Cooperative School.

Finally there are some new stamps and prints added to the 2006 gallery. Nothing has a price or shopping cart attached to it anymore, just the image and particulars for your enjoyment.

For the moment, if on the totally extreme outside chance that anyone wants to buy a piece of my work please just email me.

Will it ever rain in Seattle again?..............

It Has Come To My Attention

It struck me the other day that most of the eMERITUS Website has proved irrelevant. When I first developed it I was extremely enthusiastic that offering a number of services along with providing an easy way to purchase my and other artists' work online might prove successful. Now, a little less than two years into the venture I must admit that it has been a bust. Certainly good things have come from it―everyday about 10 new people visit the site and explore my ideas and work.

Over the next month or so I am going to separate the chaff from the grain. The new look will be more visual and less materialistic. And so it goes.

CT Chew: 2006

Everyday I get hundreds (sometimes thousands!) of emails asking about my new work. I have finally lifted myself off my duff and added a new gallery 2006.

eBay Fun Kaput

It went fast and furious for several months selling stamps and posters on eBay. Before the holidays I could barely keep up with the auction orders. Things went well through January, but then came the Winter Olympics and amazingly, the whole thing gave up the ghost. In February it got pretty boring listing items on eBay and not selling anything. Go figure. I am pretty much over my brief addiction to eBay selling now. Withdrawl was tough though, and I am writing a bestseller about it called "A Million Little Stamps".

ˇBut! ˇOlé!

When all seems glum what should come along, but a new conjunto band to keep me and two other musician friends occupied. We are: Listen to our music here.

Mid Summer Night's Scheme

A week ago I got a nice email from Fred Brown in England. He was interested in three of my giclee prints. I was excited, it was my biggest Internet sale. I wrote Fred back with instructions about payment. He replied that because they were in the process of moving from England to a new house in South Africa he would need to send me a bank draft. After cashing the draft I was to send the artwork to his shipping agent in England. If that's what you want, I answered. Two days went by and then I heard from Mr. Brown's wife, Ms. Brown. She was frantic. They were moving and Fred had just had a medical setback. He had instructed her to follow up on the art purchase though. She wrote, To be sure to cover all expenses I am sending a draft for $4000 US; please cash it at a check cashing store and send the overpayment, $3200, with the art to our shipper, United Express. It was at this juncture that I realized I was being conned. I Googled Mr. Brown and his wife, the shipping company, and their address. Lo and behold I was not the only one being asked to cash a check and forward the overpayment back to the sender. I had been an intended victim of the ol' Nigerian 401 scheme! Come on, you Nigerians, artists are harder to fool than that! ˇOlé!

Charm of the Internet

With all its potential for mischief the Internet still has its charming side. When eMERITUS first appeared on the Net I noticed a number of other sites had already linked to us; so I clicked and visited them, to see who was so interested in eM.

One of the links took me to a young artist, Masha Averina, a painter living in Moscow, Russia. I was enchanted by her work and decided to see if I could purchase one. After a few emails the deal was struck and a two weeks later I received this delightful picture:

Masha Averina: Sketches in Kolomenskoe
